  1.           The effect of stimulations, external or internal, is to 
  2.      break up the unison of action of some part or the whole 
  3.      of the brain. A speculative suggestion is that the 
  4.      disturbance in some way breaks the unity of the actual 
  5.      pattern that has been previously built up in the brain. The 
  6.      brain then selects those features from the input that 
  7.      tend to repair the model and to return the cells to their 
  8.      regular synchronous beating. I cannot pretend to be able 
  9.      to develop this idea of models in our brain in detail, but it 
  10.      has great possibilities in showing how we tend to fit 
  11.      ourselves to the world and the world to ourselves. In some 
  12.      way the brain initiates sequences of actions that tend to 
  13.      return it to its rhythmic pattern, this return being the act 
  14.      of consummation, or completion. If the first action 
  15.      performed fails to do this, fails that is to stop the original 
  16.      disturbance, then other sequences may be tried. The
